13. There are so Many Tourists Here

In all of the cities we have been to, we are surrounded by a lot of people. The tight alleyways and small streets of Venice make the big tour groups even more obvious. Today we took to the streets despite the rain and walked around the city. Every turn presented another photo opp and I've discovered that most of my pictures for this trip are going to look exactly the same. For some reason I think that each canal or street I look down is prettier than the last.

The streets are lined with street vendors and little shops. It is becoming increasingly harder to resist  buying these masks. Arden and I are trying to come up with someway to fit them in our backpacks

From February to March Venice celebrates the Carnevale Di Venezia where they say "Farewell to Meat" during the season of lent. The masks are a big deal for this carnival and there are Grand Balls held every night for the price of 500 euros per person!

During our tour we learned about the history of some of the buildings. On the left is an example of two buildings that are falling towards each other so these little archways were built to help keep them up. On the right is a five story spiral staircase that used to be the outside of a palace. We would tour the place, but apparently it is under eternal construction.

Every day at noon, the newspaper boy would climb these stone steps and sell newspapers to the public. This was on the banking side of Venice. The other side was considered the political part of Venice and they were both separated by a bridge that the left picture was taken from.
