Jet lag is taking
over! After the flight, we were all in bed by 8 pm and wide awake at 3 am. We
used this time to catch up on Hungarian soap operas and have a midnight snack.
By 6 am we were all back in bed. Our day officially began with a trip to the
Liszt Museum. Franz Liszt was a famous Hungarian composer and this museum was
made from the apartment he lived in. Some of our favorite artifacts were his
marble hand, 8 busts, and a little flower ornament that we are pretty sure was
made out of his hair. We even went to the piano concert after the walk through
tour. Our tickets were for the 8th row, so we were pretty stoked
until we found out there were 10 rows. I
would say what my favorite piece was, but we failed to follow the Hungarian
program correctly. As Brody put it “I like the one that went high and then low”
Songs by Bach, Brahms, Rachmaninov, and Schubert... No Liszt. |
After a quick lunch
and a 30 minute… okay 2 hour nap (jet-lag: 2, Friend Family: 0) we took a walk
to the Hungarian State Opera House. Outside the doors was this statue! Seeing
as we are Liszt pro’s now, we recognized him immediately.
We didn't buy the
special bracelets, so we couldn't take pictures during our tour of the Opera
House, but it was pretty! The Auditorium was decorated in ornate gold, with
three levels. The third level was for the lower classes and entirely separate
from the first and second floor. It still is today, so we considered getting
tickets. We saw the King and Queen’s staircase and learned that at the time of
construction, the King and Queen were not allowed to turn their heads;
therefore they would not be able to see the elaborate entrance that was made
for them. To circumvent this setback, there was a mirror placed on the wall
opposite of them so they could see what their money was spent on.
